American culture Journal Before I take the course American culture, there is a general belief in my heart that the Americans can walk anywhere, rest anywhere or do whatever we need to do to survive.Tell that to the homele.Although courts struck down laws against vagrancy years ago, sleeping on the streets or in public parks is still illegal, as is hitchhiking, panhandling and other “freebies” broke people need to survive.And there are countle laws and ordinances designed to give police officers probable cause to violate our freedoms.The American Dream includes that anyone can be succeful and everyone deserves to be happy.Americans believe that among these are Life, liberty and the pursuit of happine is the most important.In America freedom is defined as that I can do whatever I want, as long as I don’t hurt anyone else.Furthermore, another idea changed by the course is that Americans eat hamburgers or steak every day, in other word, because American is a nation of immigrants with short history, it don’t have its own food culture.However, after the cla, I surf the Internet to learn about American food culture.The cuisine of the United States is extremely diverse, owing to the vastne of the continent.Mainstream American culinary arts are similar to those in other Western countries.Wheat and corn are the primary cereal grains.Traditional American cuisine uses ingredients such as turkey, white-tailed deer venison, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, squash, and maple syrup, indigenous foods employed by American Indians and early European settlers.The types of food served at home vary greatly and depend upon the region of the country and the family's own cultural heritage.Different regions of the United States have their own cuisine and styles of cooking.In short, American food is a hotchpotch derived from different nations.American creates its own dietary culture which is diversified and unique.They pursue the value of science and nutrition.Simultaneously, they take pride in their dietary culture.The last idea been changed greatly is about the individualism and collectivism.Once I have no knowledge about the two words.Now, after taking the course I know that collectivism means the primary group, usually the immediate family, which is the smallest unit of survival.People identity themselves according to one’s membership and role in a group.Individualism means the smallest unit of survival is the individual.People identify primarily with self.This two kind of lifestyle reflect in many aspects of life, such as in marriage, in relationships or in education.To be honest, although I have taken the course for a semester, I still know little about the whole American culture.I wish someday I can travel to America to have a more real and close approach to America.
