Good morning/afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,As a student majoring in computer science, I have recently got a part-time “job” in the field of culture— serving as an agony sister to a roommate who is so angry with her boyfriend.Two weeks ago, she asked her boyfriend to send her a love letter on her forthcoming birthday.This young gentleman did hand in the “aignment” on time — a big and beautiful envelope containing something.Much pleased, she opened it.To her astonishment, there was a printed love letter inside.What’s worse, after a search on Google, she found the letter was copied from the Internet.That became the last straw.It goes without saying that we young people have benefited a lot from the unprecedented progre of science and technology.But are we happy? Have we found the true meaning of life? The Internet is so convenient that we can contact each other in a minute, but how much time have we spent together with our family and friends? Automobiles can get us anywhere we want, but how often do we get close to Mother Nature? We might be living in high-rise buildings and leading a very comfortable life, but have we ever bothered ourselves to know our neighbor’s name? If science is a panacea to all these problems, why my roommate is so angry with her boyfriend? And why a worried mother can only yell her son Jia Junpeng(贾君鹏)to(pause his network game and)go home for dinner through online post？Then what shall we turn to? Culture might be a way out because it has numerous magic spells—turning a simple mind into a whole man, just as Francis Bacon remarked, “Reading makes a full man, conference a ready man , and writing an exact man.”
Ladies and gentlemen, Rabelais says, “Science without conscience is the soul's perdition.” Science knows no good and evil;people do.Guns do not kill;people kill.Let culture guide us!Let us be master of science, not slave!Thomas Edison or Mr.Hyde, Einstein or Frankenstein, it is our choice to make!
