Analysis the Social Significance of Oliver Twist
Abstract: Charles Dickens is the major representatives of Britain realistic literature in 19th, who is one of the most influential novel masters in the European history of modern literature.In Oliver Twist, he uses the exquisite brushwork and rich life experience, recreating the real life of the poor children in bourgeois culture, revealing the hypocrisy and dark of the poor relief in that capitalist society at that time.It produces huge influence on the political, educational and cultural and other aspects.This paper introduces the personal information and achievements of Charles Dickens, as well as the content and background information of Oliver Twist, and from two aspects of home and abroad presents research situation about Oliver Twist, involved in literature, religion and moral aspects of human nature, then making detailed description about the social significance of Oliver Twist.Based on the social background at that time, the thesis analyses the social significance of Oliver Twist from four aspects.From the political aspect, this part reveals the darkne of workhouses, describing the miserable life of poor children who live in London underworld.From the educational aspect: Nancy, for example, analyzing the influence of education for the children's growth.From the moral aspect: according to the description of different characters, reflecting the hero’s purity and good.From the cultural aspects: This part is from three aspectsRuth’s home.And when their whereabouts are exposed, Oliver struggles to survive and climbs to a house, which is happened to the house that they have stolen.When Monks goes to spy Oliver's birthplace, just meeting Mr.Bull in his bar.So he gets something that can prove Oliver’s Life experience from Mrs.Bull and destroys them.The coincidence in logic does not work in real life.But Dickens ingeniously combines them together, making readers naturally receive the delicate coincidence in the proce of reading.Good finally will win over evil, and evil will give in to good.With the moral expectation of romanticism, Dickens gives Oliver Twist a wonderful ending.After all kinds of suffering of torture and beatings, Oliver still remains a good and pure heart, and finally obtains the happy life.Mi Rose is finally able to get married with Harry.Dickens reflects the kind desire of the weak, giving a variety of punishment to the representative figure of the dark force.Fagin is sentenced to death, getting what he should be punished.Sykes is strangled in the hurried fleeing.Monks gets the heritage but spends all money soon after, 17 who commits the fraud crimes and dies in a prison.So perfect ending, it obvious that rarely happen in real life.However what goes around comes around.It very accord with the Dickens’ romantic moral expectations.4.2.3 Humorous Art in Oliver Twist
In Oliver Twist, Dickens uses the writing with critical realism, describing naturally all observations that contradiction and absurd of life, without any rhetoric.He uses the exaggerated contrast design, with the logic relation of dramatic, taking readers into the exaggeration of the story.He is on the basis of in-depth observation of reality, criticizing the reality with a sharp tone, mobilizing various arts to achieve humorous effect.Dickens’ novel-Oliver Twist is to use the unique exaggeration and sharp expreion that develops humor art to an extreme.Exaggerated language is a kind of expreion of Dickens’ a sense of humor.In Oliver Twist, Dickens always likes using irony.Oliver is an orphan at birth, wandering in the edge of life and death.But the novel says: ―In this short period of time, if Oliver is surrounded by considering grandmother, maternal grandmother, worried aunts, experienced nurse and knowledgeable doctor.He must be dead immediately.There is no doubt about it.‖(Dickens 1994: 15).Expreing the hero’s sad plight by ironic and exaggerated tone ion, making the readers laugh.Exaggerated character that cooperates with the plot and scene is Dickens’ feature.Such as when Boolean is working while he always wear a triangular hat;Grimwig always speaks with “I eat my head” at the end.The sarcasm is combined with romantic style performance, making people laugh at the same time exposing ugly face of capitalism.Dramatic scenes, abrupt expreion and exaggerated humorous art totally show us the well-dreed gentlemen’s heart of narrow, selfish, ruthle and cruelty.In addition to the exaggerated language, Dickens's writing has a sharp sense of humor imagination.The ending of the novel, when the thief--Faigin is at trial, Dickens states Fagin’s psychological movement with a sharp imagination.“He stood there, in all this glare of living light, with hand resting on the wooden slab before him, the other held to his ear, and his head thrust forward to enable him to catch with greater distinctne every word that fell from the presiding judge, who was delivering his charge to the jury.At time, he turned 18 his eyes sharply upon them to observe the effect on the slightest featherweight in his favor…‖Dickens describes the details of his psychological change, exposing the evil of Fagin’s inner doubts and fears directly and sharp.Good humor and statements make readers feel Fagin’s sad and helple.And it is also fulfilled the words of ”one good turn deserves another, what goes around comes around".5.Conclusion Dickens is the critical realism writer of British in the 19th century, occupying an important position in the history of world literature.The age that he lives in UK is the rise of capitalism, which the change and development of the society provides rich material for his creation, combining with his own hard experience, including the deep observation of British and American social phenomenon.He writes many popular claics.His works fully reflects the reality of all ranks and claes, showing deep sympathy to the sufferings of the people and labor that live in capitalism prosperity.At the same time, his work mercilely exposes and attacks the hypocrisy and unreasonable phenomenon of capitalist system.Oliver Twist is one of the masterpieces of Dickens, which is the vivid portrayal of the dark social evil, digging deeply the dark side of the society.Through the innocent and tragic children, Dickens thinks that he should not only wake up the human conscience but also remove the dark forces and unreasonable responsibility system.This work has a strong romantic emotional appeal, which is full of humanitarian feelings.This paper vividly depicts beauty and ugline, good and evil including struggle of justice and evil, praising the integrity and good nature of people, attacking the hypocrisy of British charity and boy security police.This work has so much influence, because it hides the strong emotion that can impre the contemporary author behind the novel.A part of the emotion is from Dickens’ childhood experiences, the other part is from he produces after he seeing the poor’s living environment.This novel is very succeful and attracts widespread attention.Whose content permeates the author's discontent and protest to the Poor Law, and this kind of emotion is reflected in many of Dickens' works.Oliver Twist is from the perspective of Oliver, reflecting the real life in the British workhouse and slums.In the novel, the description to the workhouse and den are from real life.The characters and the plot is very real, which can make the readers produce the induction that Oliver has suffered, also making the middle bourgeoisie feel the hardships of life and tenacity.When readers enter Oliver’s childhood suffering, they will be deep trapped in sorrow and sympathy, knowing the happine of life that is hard-won.Meanwhile, it makes readers think that the battle of good and evil, understanding good and love feelings is lovely and valuable.Oliver Twist is really a great work in the literature of world, no matter in Victorian Age or in the Modern society.In the novel, Dickens directly criticizes the Poor Law and wants to encourage readers to improve the intolerable conditions.It is the truthful presentation of the miseries and oppreion of the poor.The description of the criminal slums in London where little Oliver lives brings Dickens produces the idea of social reform.People start to think about social reasons for so many criminal phenomena.The novel shows that such miseries are the result of the social system and institutions.Especially the description of different and unforgettable characters makes the novel vivid and
