Jane Austen(16 December 1775-18 July 1817)was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She is one of the best-loved writers in English literature. She was tutored at home by her parents and older brother. As they were avid readers, Jane received a broader education than most women of that age.The support of her family was critical to Austen's later

development as a profeional writer. She started writing for family amusement when she was a child.Jane was unmarried all her life, but her social life was active. She was connected with the middling-rich landed gentry that she portrayed in her novels.Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the eighteenth century and are part of the transition to nineteenth-century realism.Austen's plots, though fundamentally comic, highlights the dependence of women on marriage to

secure social standing and economic security.Like those of Samuel Johnson, one of the strongest influences on her writing, her works are concerned with moral iues.Pride and Prejudice which was published in 1813 is one her greatest major novels.Mr.Bennet is an English gentleman with five

unmarried daughters, and Mrs.Bennet has been keen to seek husband for her daughters with great enthusiasm. One day the Bennets has a new neighbor called Bingley who is a wealthy bachelor, and he is soon considered the target of Mrs.Bennet.At a ball,Bingley is immediately attracted to Jane Bennet— the oldest of the five sisters.—which makes Mrs.Bennet go mad with joy.Bingley’s friend Darcy also comes to the ball,he is handsome, rich, and proud. Many girls are attracted by him, but Darcy thinks that none of them could suit his preference, including Elizabeth(second oldest daughter in the Bennets). On the other hand, Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and has a prejudice about him, because she thinks that Mr.Darcy always shows others an impreion of pride and is of no respect to others.Later, at the next dance after witneing the sharpne of her mind, Darcy displays an attraction to Elizabeth at a second ball, but she refuses him because of how the insults he heaped upon her before. As time goes by, Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth Bennett because of her lovely behavior. The official Wickham is welcomed by the villagers, and Elizabeth also admires him.One day, Wickham tells Elizabeth that his father was once the

steward of the Darcys.Darcy’s father regarded Wickham as his own son and showed more love to him than to Darcy. After Darcy’s father died, the property should be inherited by Wickham, but it was all deprived by Mr.Darcy.All this increases Elizabeth’s prejudice about Mr.Darcy.At another ball, Mr.Darcy invites Elizabeth to dance with him, but Elizabeth refuses him.Elizabeth’s elder male cousin Mr.Collin comes to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennet's property by rules, he wants to marry one of the Bennets.Knowing that Jane was already engaged with Mr.Bingley, he asks Elizabeth to marry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Elizabeth’s friend.Mr.Collins is good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the help of Lady Catherine. One day his family was invited to Rosings Garden by Lady Catherine.Elizabeth also goes there with Mr.Collin and Charllote. There she again meets Mr.Darcy who’s Lady Catherine’s nephew.Later in a garden, Sir William tells Elizabeth about Mr.Darcy’s latest act of diuading Mr.Bingley’s marring Jane Bennet which causes Elizabeth’s exceedingly anger. Then Mr.Darcy comes to the Collins’ and confees his love for Elizabeth, but he was rejected impolitely by Elizabeth. She

cites both Wickham's story and Jane's broken heart as the two primary reasons for anger. This is really hard for Mr.Darcy, he left with a letter to Elizabeth which removes Eli’s misunderstandings of him.Elizabeth has a guilty conscience for wronging Darcy, and she is also ashamed of her mother’s and sisters’ behavior.Elizabeth goes to Darcy’s Pemberley Garden with her uncle and aunt.Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt are also impreed by Darcy’s politene.Elizabeth finds that Darcy has changed a lot.Gradually Eli’s prejudice of Mr.Darcy disappeared. At the same time, Elizabeth receives a letter from her family, saying that Lydia Bonnet has run away with Wickham which really embarraed Elizabeth. She thinks Darcy will look down upon her family. But it’s revealed that Darcy actually finds them eventually and helps to pay the dowry for Wickham to take Lydia in marriage, an act that imprees Elizabeth greatly, her prejudice for him turns into sincere love.Shortly thereafter, Lady Catherine visits Longbourn and tries to strong-arm Elizabeth into rejecting any proposal from Darcy.Elizabeth gets mad – why is this woman trying to control her? – and basically tells her to get lost. When Darcy heard the news, he knows that Elizabeth

has already changed her attitude to him.He goes to Elizabeth and proposes to her sincerely. All shall be well, and Jack shall have Jill.Pride and prejudice is one of my favorite novels.By the description and discuion of the four marriages in the novel, we can see that Austen fully exprees her views on love and marriage.Only by appreciating the marriage founded on the basis of mutual understanding and true love, but also by satirizing the marriage founded on the basis of origin and desire.Love and marriage is closely aociated with property and society, but love and marriage can not only be decided by the property and social status. She rejects the marriage based only on

wealth. The marriage based on social position and money can’t bring happine in life.Aimle marriage and love are unpractical. If you only married for wealth, the rest of your life might be miserable, and your marriage will filled with endle bitterne.
