My thoughts on 'Gone with the Wind
In my first year at university, I have finished 'Gone with the Wind' at my teacher’s recommendation.Personally, I am really fond of this book, and I like Scarlett, one of the main characters of the book because of her bravery.In her girlhood, Scarlett fell in love with Ashley, but Ashley later got married with Melanie.On her impulse, Scarlett married a man that she didn’t love.At the news of her husband’s death, Scarlett did not feel sad, not even a little;however, she was painful and distreed because Ashley had to do all the farm work with the other people.Once again, Scarlett had married to another man for the security of the people like Ashley and for the peace of the Tara.But in the end, Scarlett found her love not as what she thought before.Ashley rode a horse coming.He looked so handsome, so different that she put the outfit that she imagined on him regardle of whether his feeling, also ignoring what would happen to him.Just as she always loved the set of beautiful clothes, she pursued a fictional love, and a fictional lover.What she failed to realize until the end was that she did not love Ashley.On the contrary, she just liked the beautiful and fanciful things and Ashley happended to be that sort of things.She didn’t know what kind of feelings she wanted, nor what kind of lover she longed for.I like Scarlett.She is a reckle and brave girl because she never made a secret for her fictional love and you can never hear a word of complaints or regrets from Scarlett for her great dedication.In order not to hurt Ashley’s false lofty face and hypocritical holine, she did not dare to talk about her feelings in front of Ashley, afraid of involving such topics.Scarlett cared for Ashley to such degree that most people around her didn’t understand that.Because all her emotions and intentions were put in Ashley, Scarlett failed to realize Reid's feelings for her.Until the end, when she lost all of the people, Scarlett came to realize that she loved Reid for he is strong, unscrupulous, enthusiastic and vulgar, just like her.Not knowing this, Scarlett also neglected what Reid had done for her: she ignored that at the bazaar meeting, Reid led her out to dance after seeing her sadne;she ignored that Reid helped her get rid of the shackles of mourning;she ignored that Reid escorted her to escape the gunfire and groaning at the night of the fall of Atlanta;she ignored Reid lent her money to let her go home;she ignored Reid comfort her without complaints when her got awoke, crying from that nightmare...Unfortunately, everything was too late.When she ran back home, everything is irreparable.“My love has vanished,” Reid told her, “ You are stubborn as a bulldog, wanting to what you want.My love was gone, and it was completely drained.”
Loving a person is too tired, just like Reid, exhausted in the end.However, to Scarlett, is it not so?
But if Scarlett had learned to cherish, there would have been a happy ending, wouldn’t there?
