Good morning, Ladies and gentleman, May I have you attention, now we arrive at the Ruin of Xuankou Middle School in Yingxiu.Yingxiu is located in Wenchuan County , Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture.It is just 80 kilometres west of the city of Chengdu.The town had a population of about 7000 in 2007.Before 2008, it’s a small, tranquil town and not unknown to the outside world , however, All changes were happened in a moment.At 02:28 pm on May 12, 2008, a 8-magnitude catastrophic earthquake took place.It was the most destructive earthquake in China in the last three decades, and Wenchuan County is the epicenter.Everyone at home and abroad was shocked by the gigantic earthquake.The houses were destroyed and nearly 100,000 people lose their lives.In the horrible earthquake, Yingxiu is one of the worst hit areas, 80% of the town was destroyed including the Xuankou middle school ahead of us.Ladies and gentleman, Now please look forward, there is a maive sculpture of
destroyed a clock in front of the collapsed teaching building.The sculpture was built in 2009 to mark the first anniversary of the earthquake.On the clock plate, the hands forever frozen at that fateful minute, 02:28 Pm.It reminds us the heart-stopping scene happened here at that time.Speaking of the Xuankou middle school, it was the key high school in the Aba region, and it had 1527 students and 133 teachers in 2007.Every year, there would always be some students in the school who were able to enroll at the top universities in China.To the local people, entering the school meant promising future.However, in the earthquake, the school lost 55 people including 43 students, 8 teachers and 4 faculty members.Besides, Many teachers and students were seriously injured.But, it should be noted that even in the unprecedented disaster, people showed tremendous unity and strong will.They tried every things to survive and help each other, some teachers and students even risked their own lives to help others.They have strong belief ,which is to live bravely.Shortly after the earthquake, the government at all levels were very much concerned about the school, Besides treating the wounded, the school were resumed claes at 3 universities in Chengdu on May 16, just four days after the earthquake.Then though the community’s efforts, the school’s teachers and students moved to Changzhi county, Shanxi Province, to pa their transition period.At the same time, The government built a new school nearby and renamed Qiyi Yingxiu middle school.In July 2009, the new school completed, all teachers and students finally came back to their home.Now, The shattered but still standing buildings of the Xuankou Middle School has been kept to provide a memorial site of May 12 Earthquake.And in order to preserve the features of the relic, the remaining building were reinforced, now they can even withstand an earthquake of 8.0 on the Richter scale.Over five years paed , many people from far and near come here and pay their tribute.Now Ladies and gentlemen, before we entering into the relic, If you are willing to pay your tribute to these brave and strong people, you could lay a yellow or white chrysanthemum at the foot of the sculpture, it’s a symbol of mourning.May those who lost their lives rest in peace and the living become stronger.Thanks.
