2005年,美国已故小说家大卫·福斯特·华莱士曾在凯尼恩学院的毕业典礼上发表演讲。
华莱士是在西方有卓越影响力的作家,被誉为“近20年来最有创造力的作家”。
演讲的一开头,他讲了一个小故事:“两条年轻的鱼遇到一条老鱼。老鱼打招呼道:早上好,孩子们。这水怎么样?两条年轻的鱼继续游了一会儿,终于,其中一条忍不住问另外一条:什么是“水”?”
演讲中提到,一个成年人的生活需要早早起床,赶赴办公室,应付8-10个小时充满挑战的工作。然后去超市、做饭,放松一会就得早早上床。因为,第二天又得周而复始,再来一遍。
人很容易在这样的生活里,形成无意识的惯性:无意识地翻手机、给生活加速、陷入琐碎的柴米油盐、忽略身边的人和事、冷漠、愤怒、抱怨,而不自知。
就像开头的故事一样,生活在“水”中太长时间,已经不知道水是什么。

哈佛大学的《幸福课》风靡全球,教授这门课的泰勒·本·沙哈尔教授认为:“幸福取决于你有意识的思维方式”。
并总结出了以下12点有意识地获得幸福的思维方式: 1.不断问自己问题。每个问题都会开启自我探索的门,然后,值得你信仰的东西就会显现在你的现实生活中。

那么到底什么才是真正的教育呢?
就像Wallace在演讲中说到的:教育的目的不是学会知识,而是学习一种思维方式——在繁琐无聊的生活中,时刻保持清醒的自我意识,不是“我”被杂乱、无意识的生活拖着走,而是生活由“我”掌控。
真正的教育,是批判性的独立思考、时时刻刻的自我觉知、终身学习的基础。
