我举个例子您就明白了。有个学员现在在Duke大学，这个学生之所以我认识，就是因为他背过《新概念英语》的第三、四册。
他从高一开始背第三册，背到高三就背完了，高考考进了北大，进北大后，他本来不想再背了，但是当他背给同学听的时候，其他同学都露出了羡慕的眼光，于是，为了这种虚荣心，他就坚持背第四册，把第三、四册背得滚瓜烂熟。他熟到什么地步呢？我把其中任何一句说出来，他能把上一句和下一句说接下去，而且语音非常标准，因为他是模仿着磁带来背。
后来去了美国Duke大学，他给我写信，他写来的英文信，我不敢回，我对他的英文有畏惧感，因为他的英文学得太好。所以我给他写中文信，并告诉他不是我不会写英文，而是想让他温习温习中文，不要忘记祖国语言。（大笑）
他告诉我，到了美国第一个星期写文章，教授把他叫过去说您这个文章是剽窃的，因为您的文章写得太好。教授说：“我20年教书没有教出这么漂亮的文章来。”这个学生说：“我没有剽窃。”教授说：“您怎么证明您没有剽窃？”这个学生说：“我没法证明我能写这么优秀的文章，但我告诉您，我能背108篇文章（注：《新概念英语》
三、四册共108篇课文），而且背得非常熟练，您想不想听？”教授说：“您背背看。”这个学生就开始背给他听，结果，他没背完两篇，教授就哭了起来，为什么？因为这个教授想一想自己教了三十年了，居然一篇文章也没有背过，被中国学生背掉了，所以很难过。（全场大笑)
