Step One Lead-in To show the pictures and a map of some places in the USA (Activity One)
1. To give a description of these places
California is a state in the west of the USA. It is on the east coast of the Pacific Ocean. Los Angeles, Hollywood, Disneyland and Santa Monica are in California. Los Angeles is a modern city with lots of tall buildings. Hollywood is famous for its movie. Disneyland is a place for people to enjoy themselves.
2. To pronounce the names of these places
Step Two To listen twice and follow Betty’s journey (Activity Two)
( Betty went on holiday in California. First, she went to Los Angeles, then she went to Disneyland. Next, she went to Hollywood. Finally, she went to Santa Monica and went swimming in the Pacific Ocean.) 1-6-2-4-3
Step Three Pre-listening
1. Students remember key phrases of the dialogue: on holiday, have a good time, at the airport, go swimming, two years ago, on the same day, be going to a place, how long does it take sb to so sth?
2. Students remember some irregular past simples of verbs: be-was/were buy-bought come-came do-did get-got go-went have-had leave-left meet-met read-read send-sent see-saw swim-swam spend-spent take-took write-wrote (Activity Five)
Step Four Students listen to the dialogue twice and answer the questions (Activity Four)
1. When did Betty go to Los Angeles in holiday? She went two years ago.
2. How long did it take her? It took her about nine hours.
3. Where did she go? She went to Disneyland, then Hollywood and finally Santa Monia.
4. Who met her at the airport? Her aunt and uncle met her at the airport.
5. How long did they spend in Los Angeles? They spent two days there.
6. What did they see? They saw the homes of the movie stars.
7. Where did they go swimming? They went swimming in the Pacific Ocean at Santa Mornia
Step Five Language points (Activity Three)

be on holiday 或 have a holiday 意为”在度假”
Eg. We visited many places on holiday. 我们假期参观了许多地方。
2. We had a great time. 我们玩得很高兴。= We enjoyed ourseleves a lot.
have a great/good time和enjoy oneself都是“玩得很高兴”的意思。
3. How long did it take to get there? 去那儿花多长时间?
1) how long 多久,对一段时间进行询问。
Eg. How long did you live there? Three months. 你在那儿住了多久了?三个月。
2) take 指”花费时间”; it为形式主语,而真正的主语为不定式,
常用句型it takes sb time / money to do sth
Eg. It took you three months to live there. 你花了三个月的时间住在那儿。
4. We got there at 9 o’clock in the morning on the same day! 我们在同一天的上午到那儿!

5. How long did you spend there? 你们在那儿呆了多长时间?
spend 的主语是人
1) spend time / money on sth.
Eg. She spends lots of money on new clothes. 她把许多钱花在新衣服上。
2) spend time / money (in) doing sth.
Eg. You spent three months living there. 你花了三个月的时间住在那儿。

Step One Pre-reading
1. To show the pictures of some places in London
Do you know these places? They are very beautiful and famous. They are in London. These places are Buckingham Palace, Chinese restaurant, Big Ben, British Museum, Hyde Park, Tower Bridge
2. To pronounce the names of these places
3. To give some phrases: the next day, be going to do, arrive by plane, take a taxi (to), go for a walk, be tired, have dinner, do some shopping, listen to a concert, come back (to), read the newspaper, write some postcards, send some emails (to sb), take lots of photos, fly home, say hello to sb.
Step Two Fast reading (Activity One)
Students read the email quickly and put the given places in the correct order :

Step Three Careful reading

4. fly to a place = go to a place by plane
eg. Yesterday Jim flew to Beijing. 昨天吉姆坐飞机去北京。
5. say hello to sb. 该句用于向别人传达问候,常用于口语中或书信、电子邮件末尾
