The Writing Proce
7-Steps Writing Proce :
1.Select a Topic from your chosen film among the themes such as life, human nature, death, happine, spirit or soul, morality, truth, kindne, beauty, justice, family, love, loyalty, noblene, responsibility and forgivene.2.Formulate a Thesis Statement
3.Prepare an Outline
4.Find the Relevant Information and Sources
5.Take Notes
6.Write the Paper
7.Document the Sources
Step 1)Select a Topic
What to consider when selecting a topic:
What interests you most?(writing style, ideas such as philosophical, religious or literary)
Availability of research material(how much you know and how much you can know about the topic)
Prior understanding of the topic(what’s your accumulation of the relevant knowledge and information)
Manageability of the topic(weather you can handle it, or to what extent you can probe into it)
Length, due date, and type of aignment(literary critics or book report with a hypothesis, 1000 to 1500 words, at the end of this semester)
Be aware of Topic that maybe too…
Complex(one hypothesis for one paper)
Broad(it’s better to start with a small and specific topic than a big and general one)
Narrow(only focus on one point without further develop it to a convincing conclusion)
Emotional(biased, too subjective, exaggerate without examples or facts to illustrate the idea)
Step2)Formulate a Thesis Statement
* Consider the purpose of the paper and the requirement of the aignment
* Consider your unique focus for the paper
* Consider what is to be proved, or shown, in the paper.Step 3)Prepare an Outline
Always make an outline of a composition before you begin to write.Outline
Three reasons:
1.Organize ideas, omit irrelevant ones.Include important ones, put supporting sentences in logical order.2.Be able to write more quickly(磨刀不耽误砍柴工).Preparing an outline is 75%of the whole work. And your are unlikely to go astray while writing.3.Your grammar will improve because you don’t need to concentrate on thoughts and organizations. In a word, improved organization, speed, and grammar make learning to outline well worth the effort. Begin your outline with an Introduction and end your outline with Conclusions
Break down the scope of your thesis into “chunks” Think about the flow of one section to the next
Step 4)Find information
Determine what information you need…(Basically based your paper on the content in your book and the materials I printed for you this term):
For each section of your outline
Write it out in question form
Highlight the key concepts
Example:
___Does an individual have the obligation to go on living even if the beauty, power, dignity and meaning are gone?—Comment on the Right to Die. Explain the key terms or concepts you want to develop in the paper
Keywords is like a Google-it searches the full-text of a web-page for your query terms
You could search for your important terms in the article title, the abstract, the Subject terms or the full-text.Step 5)Take Notes
Search for the reading materials for examples and facts to illustrate your viewpoints(title, page, author, publisher, dates) First of all, arrange them in a logical order for the formation of an outline
Key your Notes to a section of your outline
Step 6)Write the paper
If you are having trouble starting to write… Start wherever you feel most comfortable writing. You don’t have to write a paper linearly. SPELL-CHECK!!-But don’t rely entirely on the automated spellchecker
Be sure to read the entire article after your final edit…Evaluate it for:
1.Clarity of purpose(forget about your starting points, to answer the question raised in the introduction)
2.Proper emphasis of important ideas and divisions(avoid redundancy)
3.Eliminating gaps and irrelevant materials(avoid black box)
4.Accuracy in presenting or interpreting facts(objective)
5.Appropriatene of the choice of words(the right word in the right place)
6.Correctne of grammatical structure and form(profeional)
7.Unity and coherence in writing(as smooth as silk)
Step 7)Document Your Sources
Sources vs.Bibliography
Sources are materials you actually cite in your paper(the materials printed for you)
Bibliography is a list of other material the reader may want to consult on the subject. Why document your Sources?
Ethical: It’s not right to take credit for some else’s work
Legal: You could be punished,(can’t get your BA, expelled, or sued
Types of Plagiarism
Direct Plagiarism
Taking exact words of another author without citing the author
Buying or selling a paper
Indirect Plagiarism
When a paragraph is too close to the original words of another author
Accidental Plagiarism
Simply forget to cite a source due to a slopping or poor note-taking procedures. The above is my requirement for your term paper, I WISH I COULD READ SOMETHING VERY ORIGINAL with sources clearly stated.Attention:
Each paper should start with an outline(三级分类目录)with at least an introduction, 3 paragraphs about 100 words, and a conclusion.
