第1题(5分)

Why does

Why does cream go bad faster than butter? Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition—a finding that could help rid some proceed foods of chemical preservatives.Cream and butter contain pretty much the same substances, so why cream should sour much faster has been a mystery. Both are emulsions—tiny globules(小球体)of one liquid evenly distributed throughout another. The difference lies in what’s in the globules and what’s in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the investigation. In cream, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery solution are locked away in a sea of fat.The bacteria which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery regions of the mixture.“This means that in cream, the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,” he says. When the situation is reversed, the bacteria are locked away in compartments(隔仓室)buried deep in the sea of fat.Trapped in this way, individual colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out of nutrients(养料).They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products.“In butter, you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing,” says Brocklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies keen to see if their products can be made resistant to bacterial attack through alterations to the food’s structure.Brocklehurst believes it will be poible to make the emulsions used in salad cream, for instance, more like that in butter. The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning it into a solid lump.1.The significance of Brocklehurst’s research is that ____________.A it suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without preservatives B it discovered tiny globules in both cream and butter C it revealed the secret of how bacteria multiply in cream and butter D it found that cream and butter share the same chemical composition 正确答案:A

2.According to the researchers, cream sours fast than butter because bacteria _________.A are more evenly distributed in cream B multiply more easily in cream than in butter C live on le fat in cream than in butter D produce le waste in cream than in butter 正确答案:B

3.According to Brocklehurst, we can keep cream fresh by ___________.A removing its fat B killing the bacteria C reducing its water content D altering its structure 正确答案:D

4.The word “colonies”(Line 2, Para.4)refers to __________.A tiny globules B watery regions C bacteria communities D little compartments 正确答案:C

5.Commercial application of the research finding will be poible if salad cream can be made resistant to bacterial attack _____________.A by varying its chemical composition B by turning it into a solid lump C while keeping its structure unchanged D while retaining its liquid form 正确答案:D

第2题(5分)

Material cu

Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used—what a culture produces.Examining a culture’s tools and technology can tell us about the group’s history and way of life.Similarly, research into the material culture of music can help us to understand the music culture. The most vivid body of material culture in it, of course, is musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art.Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra.Sheet music or printed music, too, is material culture.Scholars once defined folk music cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America.Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs.Besides, the ability to read music notation has a far-reaching effect on music and, when it becomes widespread, on the music culture as a whole. One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media—radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocaette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the “information revolution”, a twentieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nineteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modern nations;they have affected music cultures all over the globe.1.Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance because ________.A it helps produce new cultural tools and technology B it can reflect the development of the nation C it helps understand the nation’s past and present D it can demonstrate the nation’s civilization 正确答案:C

2.It can be learned from this paage that ________.A the existence of the symphony was attributed to the spread of Near Eastern and Chinese music B Near Eastern music had an influence on the development of the instruments in the symphony orchestra C the development of the symphony shows the mutual influence of Eastern and Western music D the musical instruments in the symphony orchestra were developed on the basis of Near Eastern music 正确答案:B 3.According to the author, music notation is important because ________.A it has a great effect on the music culture as more and more people are able to read it B it tends to standardize folk songs when it is used by folk musicians C it is the printed version of standardized folk music D it encourages people to popularize printed versions of songs 正确答案:A

4.It can be concluded from the paage that the introduction of electronic media into the world of music ________.A has brought about an information revolution B has speeded up the appearance of a new generation of computers C has given rise to new forms of music culture D has led to the transformation of traditional musical instruments 正确答案:C

5.Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the paage?

A Musical instruments developed through the years will sooner or later be replaced by computers.B Music cannot be paed on to future generations unle it is recorded.C Folk songs cannot be spread far unle they are printed on music sheets.D The development of music culture is highly dependent on its material aspect.正确答案:D

第3题(5分)

You’re b

You’re busy filling out the application form for a position you really need.Let’s aume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree.Isn’t it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University? More and more people are turning to utter deception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools.A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she aumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week.Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then.If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are reluctant to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them “impostors(骗子)”;another refers to them as “special cases”.One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by “no such people”.To avoid outright(彻底的)lies, some job-seekers claim that they “attending” means being dismied after one semester. It may be that “being aociated with” a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that’s when they began keeping records, anyhow. If you don’t want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from “Smoot State University”.The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the “University of Purdue”.As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.1.The main idea of this paage is that ________.A employers are checking more closely on applicants now B lying about college degrees has become a widespread problem C college degrees can now be purchased easily D employers are no longer interested in college degrees 正确答案:B

2.According to the paage, “special cases” refers to cases that ________.A students attend a school only part-time B students never attended a school they listed on their application C students purchase false degrees from commercial firms D students attended a famous school 正确答案:B

3.We can infer from the paage that ________.A performance is a better judge of ability than a college degree B experience is the best teacher C past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees do D a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job competition 正确答案:D

4.This paage implies that ________.A buying a false degree is not moral B personnel officers only consider applicants from famous schools C most people lie on applications because they were dismied from school D society should be greatly responsible for lying on applications 正确答案:D

5.The word “phony”(Line 7, Para.2)means ________.A thorough B ultimate C false D decisive 正确答案:C

第4题(5分)

The appeal of

The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects.Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’s desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work.Others are worthle and a waste of consumers’ money.Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading.A few years ago a brand of bread was offer to dieters(节食者)with the meage that there were fewer calories(热量单位,大卡)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic(适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’s real concerns.Consider fire insurance.Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of lo.But fear of lo is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the meage in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising. Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product.Consumers still control the final buying decision.1.Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthle products by _________.A streing their high quality B convincing him of their low price C maintaining a balance between quality and price D appealing to his buying motives 正确答案:D

2.The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that ________.A thin slices of bread could contain more calories B the loaf was cut into regular slices C the bread was not genuine bread D the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same 正确答案:D

3.The paage tells us that _______.A sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needs B advertisements occasionally force consumers into buying things they don’t need C the buying motives of consumers are controlled by advertisements D fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment 正确答案:A

4.It can be inferred from the paage that a smart consumer should _________.A think carefully about the benefits described in the advertisements B guard against the deceiving nature of advertisements C be familiar with various advertising strategies D avoid buying products that have strong emotional appeal 正确答案:A

5.The paage is mainly about ________.A how to make a wise buying decision B ways to protect the interests of the consumer C the positive and negative aspects of advertising D the function of advertisements in promoting sales 正确答案:C 写作题(总分15分,1题)Directions:
